The numbers of vehicles that require LRP has diminished to the point that it is no longer viable for fuel suppliers to produce, store and distribute the fuel, and for service stations to retail it. As of January 1 2005, the phase out of lead replacement petrol (LRP) commenced which has lead to many questions regarding the suitability of older (pre 1986) vehicles to be operated on unleaded fuels.
What this means for owners of older Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicles.
The phase out of LRP will affect motorists whose cars are built prior to 1986 and were formally operated on leaded fuel. Many Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicles manufactured before 1986 are suitable for operation solely on unleaded fuels.
Is my Mercedes-Benz affected?
Refer to the table below for a list of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars that are suitable for operation using unleaded fuel. The table refers only to Australian specification vehicles, imported through Mercedes-Benz Australia.
What should I do if my Mercedes-Benz is not compatible with unleaded fuel?
Most service stations that have phased out LRP will offer an AVSR (additive against valve seat recession) product in the service station shop. The AVSR additive will typically be packaged in small dispensers and can be injected or poured into the fuel tank.
