The S-Class is fitted as standard with the optimised 7-speed automatic transmission developed by Mercedes-Benz (not available for the S 600, S 63 AMG or S 65 AMG). The seven gears make for smaller intervals between gears, which means that you'll hardly notice gear changes. Having seven gears also reduces the average engine speed and fuel consumption. This system is operated using the selector lever of the DIRECT SELECT transmission, which is located next to the steering wheel.

You can also use the setup switch to select between three transmission settings: Manual, Comfort and Sporty. Gearshift paddles on the steering wheel are used for manual gear changes – just like in motorsport.

The S 63 AMG employs the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission to ensure greater sportiness behind the wheel. Key influences here include the standard-specification aluminium gearshift paddles to the left and right of the AMG sports steering wheel. Innovative transmission technology enables more rapid gear changes to deliver the power of the 8-cylinder AMG biturbo engine to the road without any interruptions in tractive power. In addition to an agile, quick-response multiple downshift capability and automatic double-declutching function, there are three transmission modes to choose from.


Controlled Efficiency (or "C" for short) stands for consumption-optimised driving, particularly in combination with the new Controlled Efficiency stop/start function (can switch off the engine temporarily when the vehicle is not moving) and with alternator management, which exploits kinetic energy from braking/coasting to charge the battery. By contrast, the transmission modes "S" (Sport) and "M" (Manual) enhance both driving pleasure and dynamic flair. Gear changes in less than 100 milliseconds are possible thanks to partial cut-off of individual cylinders when upshifting – all combined with an outstanding sound sensation.

The S 600 and the S 65 AMG are equipped as standard with a 5-speed automatic transmission, which operates with electronic transmission control and is the perfect complement to the characteristics of the 12-cylinder engine. Gear changes are quick and barely perceptible. Just the right amount of power is delivered for every situation. Manual gear changes are also possible using steering-wheel gearshift paddles (included as standard).

In the S 65 AMG gears can be selected using the DIRECT SELECT lever and with the help of shift paddles on the AMG sports steering wheel – similar to Formula 1 vehicles.
