The DIRECT CONTROL suspension (standard specification) adds a boost to driving pleasure. Thanks to DIRECT CONTROL, the suspension responds more directly than ever, delivering agile handling and a dynamic driving sensation – especially when cornering.
The Direct-Steer system (standard specification) ensures precision handling and significantly reduced steering effort by making the steering ratio increasingly more direct when negotiating tight bends or parking, for example. At high speeds, on the other hand, the emphasis is on straight-line stability, leading to improved vehicle agility and steering comfort. The electromechanical power assistance is reduced as the car’s speed increases. And the fact that power is required only for the actual steering process means that this configuration also reduces consumption.
The AIRMATIC semi-active air suspension system (optional on CLS 350 & CLS 350 CDI, standard on CLS 500) combines comfort and sportiness. It works with air springs that can be adjusted electronically for a firmer or softer setting according to driving situation, load status and road condition. When cornering at speed, for example, pitching and rolling can be reduced – and motoring pleasure significantly enhanced.
The electronically controlled air suspension system also includes the Adaptive Damping System (ADS). While AIRMATIC DC adapts to different driving situations and driving styles, ADS automatically adapts the damping force at each wheel. You can also regulate the suspension and damping yourself. By means of a switch on the centre console, you can choose from a range of suspension tuning modes ranging from "comfortable" to "sporty". At low speeds, at the touch of a button, ground clearance can be individually varied by up to 25 mm to suit load and road conditions. In order to reduce air resistance at higher speeds, the car body is automatically lowered, helping to save fuel.
